The blogging / writing 101 assignments – Day 15: Take a cue from your readers

A while back, I received the request from mun3oe to write a serialized work of fiction. At first, I honestly didn’t know what to do with the request. I don’t think of myself as a fiction writer, but I might actually be one *lol* so here it goes! I’ll use my post from yesterday to kick of the series. No promises, not sure how many posts it will be but I won’t know until I try. So I present part 2.

“Scarlett, can I come in honey?”

She opened here eyes and the sun was shining outside. Why was her throat so sore? And why was she fully dressed? Her head was pounding, like a mini drummer had installed himself there and was going on and on and on. The knocking on the door didn’t really help. She got up and saw her face in the mirror. Big eyes, smeared with mascara. She remembered why.

“Scarlett, honey, please let me in so we can talk? I need to talk to you about what happened yesterday. Please!”

She got up and walked towards the door. She hesitated. Was this a good idea? She wasn’t sure she was ready for this talk, would it be better to pretend not to hear the person on the other side of the door? She took a deep breath and opened the door. Pretending and lies were what got her in this situation. No more.

“Honey, are you ok? I am so sorry about yesterday evening. You can’t imagine how much it hurt me when I saw your face. When you found out about David. It was never our intention to..”

“To? What? Tell me ever about the fact that he is my father? Don’t bother. I don’t want to hear your excuses or sob stories.”

“But honey, all we did was to protect you. All of it. You HAVE to believe me.”

“Tell me one thing please. Who knew except the three of you? Grandma? Did she know? Aunt Lily? Everyone except me?”

It didn’t matter really. She was not in the mood to talk to anyone. She needed time to sit down and think about all of this. The lies, they had been lying to her since she was able to say “Daddy”! Her anger grew inside her, like a beast that was unleashed, and she wanted to lash out and hurt someone. Like she was hurting.

“You know what? It doesn’t matter! I hate ALL of you! You’ve been lying to me. I don’t want to talk. I don’t want to listen. Just leave me alone! Leave me alone!”

She started crying. She fell down on her bed and hid her face in the pillow. Was it all a lie? What else had her parents been lying about? And David. He knew. Why didn’t he say anything, it’s not like he didn’t have the bloody opportunity? They had spent so much time together, preparing her for yesterday evening. The evening she was supposed to ask her parents for their blessing to continue with music. Her phone buzzed. Emma. She wasn’t in the mood to talk or text and switched her phone off.

“And? Were you able to talk to her? How was she?”

“How was she? Seriously? Alex, did you see her face yesterday? My baby, my poor baby. This is not how she was supposed to find out. This is NOT what we agreed Alex!”

“Ok listen, I’m sorry. But when you told me yesterday he threatened you on the phone I was furious. I was. You can’t blame me for that. Then he showed up at our house and I find out he had been meeting Scarlett in secret! God knows what he had told her Em. I am sorry, I just couldn’t stop and I.. well, you were there.”

“Exactly. And now my baby is upstairs and she is crying. She shut the door in my face and told me she wants to be left alone. If she finds out the truth and if she finds out what else we have been hiding from her… Tell me, how are we going to deal with this? How?”

He felt so helpless. The one thing he wanted to do, was protect his family. To protect his little butterfly. And he failed. Emily was upset and he couldn’t comfort her. She was on the verge of a nervous break down and he wasn’t sure if he could help her. He should call Lily to inform her about what happened yesterday. Maybe Scarlett would reach out to her, so she should be prepared. Scarlett was not willing to let her mother in, why would she listen to him after his rage yesterday evening? She wouldn’t be able to understand why he hated David so much. Not yet. But there was one thing he could do. Find David.
