The blogging / writing 101 assignments – Day 14: Recreate a single day

The door slammed shut downstairs, she couldn’t hear them arguing anymore. She pulled the blanket up a bit more, as she felt the tip of her nose was getting cold. Great, why not add a cold to the list of disasters for today? Today was supposed to be a great day, today was supposed to be the day that she would tell her parents how much she wanted this. But it ended in a complete disaster. She started crying. Her mom kissed her and held her tight. The tears didn’t stop.

The sun peeked through the curtains and the light woke her up. She had been dreaming about today and finally the time was there to tell her parents about the most difficult decision ever. She hoped they would be supportive and encourage her to take this step forward. A new chapter in her life, something she’d never think about doing before. But then, the opportunity came along and she could not resist. She jumped out of her bed, washed her face and started brushing her teeth. Should she have invited him over as well, she wondered. Her parents were not that pleased with him, that she knew for sure. Never understood why though, he is such a nice person and her parents know him quite well. Anyway, back to the important questions in her mind. What to wear today? She finished brushing her teeth and checked her pre-selected outfits for later that day, when she would have dinner with her parents and ask their blessing. Her phone buzzed. It was Emma, she wanted to know how excited she was about tonight. Duh, what do you think Emma… like a major thing I am telling my parents about! She texted back and threw the phone on her bed.

Mom had breakfast ready and dad was already on his second coffee when she got downstairs. She grabbed a bowl of cereals mom had put on the table and added milk in the bowl. Dad was about to leave, so she quickly jumped up from her seat and asked him if he could be back home on time for dinner tonight as she wanted to discuss something special. Dad was a bit surprised and looked at mom. “No idea, but it doesn’t happen that often she asks so…”, mom said. Dad smiled and kissed her on the forehead and promised he’ll be on time. She finished her breakfast and gave her mom a kiss. Then she rushed out the door, off to work at the cafe. At least, that is what her parents were thinking.

The doorbell rang and he woke up from his daydream. Dammit, he should stop this nonsense! It seemed a good idea at the time, but now he was not too sure about it. The doorbell rang again, so he got up and made his way to the door. Maybe he should pretend not to be at home. Maybe he shouldn’t have encouraged her so much. Maybe. He could not ignore her now. He knew she wanted to tell her parents tonight and maybe he could talk to her about it not being the best moment to speak to them. But then she’d want an explanation and he was not ready for that either. He wished he never found out the truth, that got him in this situation with her parents in the first place. But it’s too late now. He opened the door and there she was, all excited and nervous at the same time. She hugged him and asked him why it took him so long to answer the door. Should he tell her the truth, that he freaked out when he started thinking about the consequences it might have if she tells her parents tonight about this, about him and about what they have been doing together.

She couldn’t help but notice that he was a bit distracted. What had happened overnight? Maybe she was worrying about something that wasn’t relevant. Should she invite him over for tonight? On second thought, it might be a good idea to have him there too. He could help her in case her parents were not supportive. Everyone in town knows him, he has a good reputation so it might help. She smiled and asked him if she could have some coffee. It was going to be a long day.

Yes! Dad just pulled up, so that meant he was on time for diner. She turned away from the window and made her way downstairs to the kitchen. She opened the drawer and took out the cutlery to set the table. She had told mom that a friend would be joining for diner and mom was ok with it. She didn’t even ask who the friend was, thank god. If mom would have asked, she was not sure she would be able to lie about it. She had been hiding the fact that they were meeting in secret for such a long time now, it just didn’t feel as the right thing to do. But he had asked her to keep it a secret. So she did, until now. She smiled.

Dad went upstairs to freshen up and change for diner. He had this weird feeling he could not get rid of. Mom walked in and she put her arms around his waist. Maybe he could ask her about diner and if she knew what their daughter was up to. Before he could say anything, she started talking. He had been calling again, she said. He wanted to know if she was planning to tell the truth anytime soon. Otherwise he would. The bastard. She started crying and sat down on the bed. Her face was wet from tears, dripping on to her blouse. Dad took her in his arms and calmed her down. He needed to take care of this asap. This is his family, no one messes with it. No one.

She turned around and looked at the mirror. Would this be good enough? She was a bit nervous about tonight. What if they hated the idea. She still had some time left before they would meet downstairs for diner so she put on her lipgloss and walked over to her bed. Her phone buzzed, he had sent a message. She sat down and read the message. He was not sure if it would be a good idea, but he will come over. For her. She jumped up and down on her bed. Now nothing can go wrong!

The doorbell rang. That would be him! Dad wanted to walk to the door, but she quickly got up and said she’ll go and check if it is her friend. Mom and dad looked at each other while she left the dining room. “What is the matter with her?” “No idea, but we’ll find out dear”.

He came! She was so happy to see him. He kissed her on the cheek and then hesitated a bit. Was this a good idea? Only one way to find out, he could not turn around and walk away as she pulled him inside and closed the door. “Mom, dad, we have a guest!” She grabbed his hand and pulled him towards the dining room. His feet felt very heavy, as did his heart. It’s now or never.

“Hi Alex, Emily. I hope you don’t mind I’ve..”

“Get the hell out of my house David. NOW! How dare you? Coming over here, when you’ve upset Emily earlier today? Threatening her? I swear, you better get the hell out of my house or I’ll beat the crap out of you!”

“Dad, what are you doing? Mom, why is he so mad at David? Mom, please!!”

“Alex, I didn’t mean to threaten Emily. I just hoped she would..”

“She would what?? You don’t have anything to hope, wish or demand! You’ve lost those rights when you left Emily. When she needed you the most!

“Mom? What is dad talking about? Mom, answer me please? David, what’s going on? Why won’t anyone tell me?”

“Scarlett, go upstairs now. Don’t argue with me, just go NOW!”

She started crying. What was going on here? Why were her parents so upset when they saw David? He didn’t do anything wrong.

“I’m not going upstairs daddy. David has done nothing wrong. He just helped me these last couple of months with my music and this is what I wanted to”

“Music? Wait hold on a minute. So you have been spending time with David without telling us??!!”

Mom had tears in her eyes and was shaking. What was so upsetting, why didn’t she say anything to daddy?

“Yes, I’ve been meeting David every other day instead of working at the cafe as I wanted to focus on my music. And I know daddy for some reason you don’t like David. But he did nothing else..”

“Don’t like? Don’t like? This man ruined your mother’s life!!”

“Alex, listen I don’t think this is the moment to tell Scarlett..”

” Tell me WHAT??”

“Yes David, go ahead. Tell her. How you are a despicable man who walked out on his girlfriend when he found out she was pregnant. How he ignored his baby girl for years because his music was so important to him. Go on, tell her! If you don’t have the guts to tell her, I will. I’ll tell her how you have threatened Emily after you found out about Scarlett’s success as a songwriter. I am her father, in every way. I’ve protected her and always will! Now get OUT!!”

It felt like the floor disappeared beneath her feet. David? Her father? How was that even possible? Why would he not say anything about it? They spent so much time together, writing songs and playing the guitar. Why? She couldn’t believe this was happening. She looked at her mom and realized it was the truth. All the songs about lost love and broken hearts David wrote, they were about her. Dad and David were still shouting at each other, but it felt like she was watching a movie unfold in front of her. She couldn’t be here anymore, couldn’t listen to David and her dad arguing and mom crying. She ran upstairs, to her room. The only safe place she could think of at this moment.
